The French Bakery

2008-04-10

On my way back from work, I bought a shawarma. There's a nearby French bakery I never went to.

If there's one food I like, it's bread. My girlfriend believes my taste for bread, pasta, and bread is probably because I'm fond of carbohydrates.

Once at the bakery, I noticed the food they seem to sell the most is pastry, but I noticed the baguettes behind the counter. The clerk, who was speaking English on the phone, surprised me with a French greeting.

-- Oh, you speak French, I said. Let's speak French, then.
-- It would be weird that if I couldn't speak French and work in a French bakery, wouldn't it?
-- Actually, a Japanese friend of mine used to work here and didn't speak French.

I guess he needs to get out more. How many times have I went to a Japanese restaurant with Chinese people working there? There's also a famous German chocolate shop, owned by a German man, but most of the employees there are not German.

He was kind enough to sell me a short baguette for a dollar. I then ask:

-- Where are you from?
-- Paris.
-- Of course. Sometimes I get the impression all French people I meet are from Paris.
-- Just the best French are from Paris.

I realised after that I met some people from Normandie once, who used to live next door. Most of my French Canadians friends will tell me once thing: people from Paris are assholes. Many believe people from Quebec are worst. Although, the guy previously mentioned was a bit impudent, I'm still not ready to generalise a whole population on one common stereotype.

This being said, I found an genealogy site recently which proved to be quite useful. My mom compiled genealogy data going back to the 18th century. Using that site, I was not only able to find more living people who are sharing the same family tree, but also find out that my ancestors possibly came to North America from Dieppe, Normandie in the 17th century.

Funny enough, I lived for two years in Dieppe, New Brunswick.
