Profile
You probably already read a few posts I made, so now here’s a little bit about me.
My name is Rémi. I won’t write my family name here, but really, it’s not hard to find. I’m an Acadian Canadian from New Brunswick, borned and raised in a northeastern French-speaking part of the province we call with pride the Acadian Peninsula, or la Péninsule acadienne, in our mother’s tongue.
I spent all my childhood in that area and I practically grew up with the Internet, after spending countless hours of my life learning BASIC on a Tandy Color Computer 3, or Coco, for short. I’m 7 years older than the Web, and when it made its way from the UK to New Brunswick, I was ready to welcome the young new way to communicate, with a new friend working to set up access to it at a local university, without knowing much about its impact it will make around the world. Thanks for all the good times, Telnet and Gopher! Time to give the HTTP a try!
As for many, the Internet has a significant impact on my life, on all aspects. The dial-up modems that connected me to the rest of the world allowed me to make new friends elsewhere in Canada, in the U.S., Japan, and other parts of the world; some I still speak with today. It started all on IRC, Usenet, Web chatrooms, my personal site in plain HTML, ICQ, then later on MSN, Twitter, Mixi, and Facebook.
After having studied as a “Webmaster” in Dieppe in 2000, and spend three painful years working in a call centre patiently trying to help customers get back online, a good friend of mine who I met in college helped me settle in the area he’s living in now, the capital of Ottawa. I’m grateful for his help. He had a feeling I would like this place, and he’s right; not only do I like this place, but I also met the first love of my life here, who I’m still with today.
I’ve met a lot of interesting people here. Everyday, I will now speak in my three languages, French, English, and Japanese. I’ve also been a full-time Web developer since a few years now, finally the job I wanted to do, perhaps even before such a title ever existed.
During all that time, I’ve always made sure to write a bit about my life to anyone who’s interested to read about it on my personal site. My Web site has changed dozens of times over the years, refreshing the look, updating the code. It has started several years ago as Térukanata, Cressida, Érémi (or “e-rémi“), and finally today, Rémino.
I am not certain what my future holds — I’ve always been a guy taking life as it comes day by day. One thing I’m sure of is you’ll always hear about me on Rémino. Hope you like my site and I look forward to read your comments!
