No bread? No problem!

I wanted to eat Nutella…

And I don’t have bread…

No problem! I’m now eating Nutella with a spoon!

French version

I’ve placed a link at the top right corner to switch to the French version, for all my francophone friends out there. (I’m also one proud French speaker!)

Though, right now, it’s not all perfect, it’s at least a start.

More computer problems

Well, nothing much today that I’ve never dealt with before. Except for that guy who was calling about his AOL CD not starting, while his DVD and CD drives were gone in the “My Computer” window.

I’ve found and simply read the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 314060CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP”, wrote a registry file to fix the problem, and gave the address to the customer.

He downloaded the file, applied the registry data, and it was all working again.

Well, his drives, that is. AOL could still not work.

I hate AOL.

Another customer called to backup her data. She wanted to copy her family’s files in three accounts on her computer, and that included each user’s files in “My Documents”, on the Desktop, and their Outlook Express data, and some Outlook data. She also wanted the “Shared Documents”. Argh!

Bah… No way I was going to spend hours with her telling where to click and where to drag the files to. I simply put her on hold and took 3 minutes of my time to write two batch files, qbackupA.bat and qbackupU.bat that I’ve put in one ZIP file. The first batch file copies all the “Shared Documents”, and the later copies the files in “My Documents”, on the Desktop, the Outlook Express data, and the Outlook data for the current user. All the files are copied in C:\Data Backup.

I just made the file, uploaded QBackup.zip to my server, told her where to get it, and we did the back up in a lot less time. Good.

There was also the other guy calling about setting up his network, which uses a Dell TrueMobile 1184 router. When searching on Google about that router, I found out that it’s using Linux to work, and that it can be hacked.

Go Linux!

New search field, user account links

Tonight, I’ve added a search field at the top-left corner and some links next to the remino.net logo that you can use to log in and out, as well as edit your account profile.

Recent problems with customers

Below is a list of links to pages that helped me troubleshoot some customers’ recent computer problems. I learn something new everyday here! Wow! And each time I learn something, I tell myself “Well, I guess I’ll go to bed less stupid tonight!”.

Personally, I think a psychologist or a janitor pretending to be one should troubleshoot the customers themselves, but hey, the pay is good.

  • Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 283069: You receive a “Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1: %2” error message after you install a new program or update a program on a computer that is running Windows Millennium Edition
  • Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 894391: FIX: DBCS attachment file names are not displayed in Rich Text e-mail messages and you may receive a “Generic Host Process” error message after you install security update MS05-012

And I just finished a call with someone who couldn’t print. All he had to do is to restart his computer… and he paid more than 40 US dollars to know that! Ha, he’s not happy. Too bad, so sad.
